RS200 Fleet Captain’s Report 2012
2012 saw a great Olympic year as well as a great sailing year; unfortunately we cannot say that for the typical British weather.
There were a few alterations to the fleet make-up in 2012. Richard Hanby moved into the laser fleet with his crew Brian moving into the mirror fleet. There were also a number of absences, Matt Brown took a sabbatical to concentrate on his passion for mountaineering and I would like to congratulate Catherine and Rob for their first arrival which kept them off the water.
New to the fleet were Ed and Emma Grayson, no doubt they will follow on from their successes in the Mirror fleet. I know that they will be sailing hard in 2013 and pushing the competition. This will add to some good racing I am sure.
Martin and Michael Penty and Steve Hanby crewed by James Marran dominated the fleet racing at Beaver. Further afield the fleet sailed at a number of open meetings including the Nationals and Inlands. Martin and Michael Penty won the RS200 fleet in August at Falmouth. James Penty crewed by Jon Evans sailed well in their fleet at the Nationals in Exmouth and steadily got to grips with the extremely strong tides. James also competed at the Inlands at Rutland crewed by Pippa Fletcher coming 35th overall. Also sailing at Rutland in their first major open meeting were Andrew and Anna Clarke who braved heavy weather with gusts up 35 knots.
2013 will be an exciting time for Beaver Sailing Club and the RS200 fleet. There is some new blood and new helm and crew line-ups, along with great new clubhouse and facilities. I look forward to seeing you all on the water in what will hopefully be a great year.
Phil Marran, Fleet Captain RS445
